AVIATE History

AVIATE is a flight planning software geared towards general aviation. It was created as a result of irritation and agony by using another flight planning software. That program made good calculations but had a stupid user interface where you had to start from the beginning again if you made any wrong entries.

The irritation, and my background in the computer business, made me buy a computer and a software development package, Borland C++ 1.0. I didn't know much about C/C++ programming so I started reading through the pile of books that came with the package. I even had the books, and sometimes even the computer, with me to the beach. My wife wasn't too happy about it though. I started making small sample codes and got things to work for me. After about 2000 hours of struggling the first version was up and running. It was made for the DOS operating system and I had created everything including the "windowing" system myself but I used Borlands Paradox Engine for the database handling routines.

I presented the program for Scandinavian Airlines System Flight Support Department and that resulted in an agreement about navdata supply. I also presented it for the Royal Flying Club Sales in Sweden and that resulted in an agreement for sale. AVIATE 1.0 became a success!

At the time I worked on AVIATE 1.0 I was working as Captain for Holmstroem Air in Sweden, flying Dornier 228's. Then I got hired by Malmö Aviation to fly as First Officer on BAe 146's. We were flying for TNT, an Australian owned freight company, and had 24 hour stopovers in Cologne, Germany. All free time was spent on creating AVIATE 2.0. Probably another 1000 hours and it also became a hit on the small Swedish market.

Pilots kept asking for a Windows version but I couldn't find the time to make one. Finally Borland released their C++ Builder which came to my rescue. I spent not more than 500 hours to release the first Windows 95/NT version. It was called AVIATE 3.0. Shortly thereafter I started refining it to create version 3.5. It took me probably another 300 hours.

AVIATE 3.5 has been a real success. People from as far as Kualalumpur is among the users.

User feedback togeather with my own ideas has now finally resulted in a new version called AVIATE 4 PRO. It has taken more than 500 hours of hard work to complete. Well, it is based on new ideas that results in a more dynamical product. AVIATE 4 PRO will probably never be complete. It will instead gradually change as new ideas and needs developes. That way the users will be kept in pace with time.

AVIATE 4 PRO is developed with Borland C++ Builder 6 including Quick Reports 3.09 from QuSoft A/S, QRDesign 1.58 from THSD and TeeChart Pro 7.05 from Steema. The program is built around these components with our own Flight Planning Engine.

The program

AVIATE 4 PRO is made to comply with regulations for VFR and IFR flight planning. It has an easy to use user interface and includes a separate flight computer (E6B-type). One of the great features you can't find in any other flight planning software is the flight plan form (flight log) editor. You can design the flight log to meet your specific needs. It has a lot of features including an advanced graphing component and a formula editor. The support for the program is made thru the program via the Internet. Whenever an updated file, program file or navdata is available, you will be notified by the program. We are allways open for feedback of any kind. Just drop us a note and we will do our best to respond to your feedback.
